Greek Letter Organizations:
Cause for Concern

This site is presented to educate the general public about the negative influence of Greek letter societies, especially all-male fraternities. Evidently all of the news reports detailing the misbehaviours of fraternity members aren't enough--people still bend over backwards to defend and protect these organizations.

The detriment to society being caused by fraternity members has grown to a very serious proportion. On my site, you will read about some of the heinous things going on in those big overpriced frat houses.

Your average ordinary frat house is filled with rich white men whose parents are funding their "education". Yes, there are fraternities specifically for minorities (black fraternities, Latino fraternities, Asian fraternities etc) but most "non specific" Greek letter societies are predominantly white. I'm wondering if groups of black or Latino men, or groups of poor, uneducated men could "get away with" the behaviours these white men get away with....

Go ahead, post your silly worthless thoughts in my guestbook! If they sound stupid enough I might just post them for all to laugh at!!

Theta Alpha member Justin Powell complained, "Some people in the administration are saying that fraternities are all about keggers, circle jerks, and date rape, but that's only a small part of what Greek life has to offer students [at Bowdoin]. There's also a lot of hazing and community service."

My views are not that people shouldn't be allowed to join fraternities. It's a free country and if a bunch of guys want to live together in a house with Greek letters on it, they're free to do so. What I am against is colleges sanctioning these "societies". I believe that what people want to do in their spare time should be completely and totally separated from their educational institution.

Here is an example of why: Fraternities give colleges a bad name--parents hear about the offenses of certain chapters and they think twice about sending their child to that school. Thus, college administrations attempt to cover up the bad behaviour of fraternity men, in order to protect the school's reputation, and prevent attendance decline. This leads to school authorities "looking the other way" when fraternity men commit crimes.

If Greek letter societies were completely separated from universities, justice could be more easily served when these men are accused with crimes. There would not be the "mad dash" by the school to "cover up" or disprove the crime. These men would be treated like any other member of society who is accused of a crime--instead of being granted special treatment just for being a part of a university-recognized organization.

Think about this: if a woman is assaulted in a fraternity house, the school encourages her to report it to campus police first. Why is that? Sexual assault is a crime, shouldn't crimes be brought to the "regular" police department? Men who happen to belong to fraternities are still members of society. A man who assaults a woman is still a criminal--no matter where the assault took place, and no matter what groups this man may be afiliated with. Criminals should be handled by the police.

Law enforcement has a responsibility to protect the general public. If a fraternity man rapes a woman at his on-campus frat house, and he is punished by the school only (i.e., expelled, his charter revoked, etc) this doesn't protect the general public. Removing this man from campus might protect students at the university, but it doesn't change the fact that he is a sex criminal. By only punishing him only through school-related avenues, the college hides his crime from everyone else. Then if the college sends him out to live among "civilians", those people are put in danger. He is never arrested, brought to trial, or punished properly for his crime. Just because he is a fraternity member, and a student of that university.

Criminals need to be punished in a uniform manner. There should not be different standards for students and non students, fraternity members and non fraternity members. If a high school cheerleader is raped at a game, would any sensible person encourage her to report it to her school principal? No, presumably she would be advised to go straight to the police. Prosecuting criminals is not the school administration's responsibility or right . Criminals should be punished according to the law. Period.

Disagree With Me?

I realize that my opinions are not shared by many. I realize that there are a lot of people out there who think that deciding to join a fraternity or sorority is the best decision they've ever made. I know a lot of you who are reading this are thinking "well, these aren't issues in my organization".

That might be true. Your fraternity or sorority may be 100% different from the ones described on my site (although I doubt it). But think about this: overall fraternities are causing a lot of problems for a lot of people. No amount of chapter suspensions or seminars or workshops will bring back the pledge who died from being hazed. Nor will it bring back the peace of mind a rape victim lost in an upstairs frat house bedroom. Trying to reform a system which is crashing and burning--and taking countless people's safety and sanity down with it--does a disservice to victims and potential victims. I don't believe that the Greek system is worth preserving. How many people have to be negatively affected until we "get it right"? I think the number is far too high already.

I challenge you to do some research. Find out for yourself about the problems that Greek letter organizations are causing. Read the news stories, research studies and personal accounts. There is a ton of info out there--online, in the newspapers, everywhere. My site is just one small collection of evidence. There are so many things happening that you may not be aware of. I don't think well informed people--if they are being honest with themselves--can truely believe that the benefits [of Greek societies] outweigh their risks.

Think Really Hard

Women: look around my site. I know you might be thinking "this doesn't really happen, this girl is just bitter or something". But do some reading!! Read about how fraternity men are often over-represented in campus rape reports. Read about how many of these men think that slipping girls drugs is a good way to get them into bed. Read about the women who never thought such a "nice guy" would rape and beat her. Think really hard before deciding to go to a fraternity party, or hang out with a group of fraternity men. Statistics show that if you do, you are putting yourself in danger. Is it worth it?? And if you are thinking about joining a sorority, think about whether you really want to support Greek letter organizations, with all the harm they seem to be doing to women. Sororities tend to be very sexist and oppressive places. Sisters often tell new members that they are now representing "XYZ" sorority and that they need to act a certain way so people will think highly of them. Example: I have heard of sorority women not being "allowed" to wear their letters while drinking. This is a blatant double standard! Do you think fraternity men are encouraged to "act like gentlemen" while wearing their letters?? No! Women have been told to act a certain way--don't be rude, don't make a scene, act like a lady, blah blah blah--since the beginning of time! All that does is keep women submissive to men. I have also heard of sororities telling a sister that if she becomes pregnant, she can no longer be an active member. Do you think fraternities have rules about getting women pregnant??? Do you think fraternities "kick out" members if they get their girlfriend pregnant? No! Because it is the woman who "bears the brunt" of an unplanned pregnancy. It's her problem, and evidently sororities believe that a mother cannot be a good representative of their organization. So much for "choice"! That is another example of sorority women being told "how to act". I for one am tired of being told to behave differently because I am a woman! Equality now!

Men: Thinking about pledging this year? Do you find yourself reading my site and thinking things like "well that never happens in MY fraternity"? Are you really sure? You know for a fact that none of your brothers have ever coerced a woman into having sex? None of your brothers have ever had sex with an intoxicated women? Even if you think you know these things never happen in your organization--think about the other forms of sexism and oppression going on. You mean to tell me that frat boys don't talk to each other about their "sexual conquests"? That frat boys never invite women over hoping to sleep with them? Sure, all men do that to some extent, but I think if you really get honest with yourself, you will realize that the fraternity setting is an especially ripe "breeding ground" for unhealthy attitudes towards women. And behaviours stem from attitudes.
